#27: Josh in "Journey 2: The Mysterious Island" (2012)

We've officially reached 2012, and that means we've hit Josh's 10th year in the business!

If you're a Joshintist (get it, like scientist? Cut me some slack...this is my 27th blog entry) like me, you might know what makes this year so special. 2012 was the year that one of Josh's biggest hits released, which we'll talk about next, but first...it's time to chat about Journey 2: The Mysterious Island.

Josh did go on to film sequels for some of his other projects, but this movie marks the first sequel he's been in where he was one of the main stars in both the first and second additions in the franchise.

Let's test your Josh knowledge - what movie is Journey 2: The Mysterious Island a sequel to and what year did it come out? (Hint: They both have 'journey' in the title...)

Yep - today, we're discussing the sequel to Josh's 2008 film, Journey to the Center of the Earth. He reprises his role as Sean, but this time, is joined by a new team: Maui the demigod and Gabriella Montez from East High (I mean...Dwayne "the Rock" Johnson and Vanessa Hudgens).

Unlike the first film, where Sean was a bit more skeptical of the adventuring, he's gung ho to take on the challenge this time. Sean's determined to find a mysterious island, which he suspects will help him meet his grandfather. His new stepfather, Hank, who is played by the Rock, isn't thrilled with the idea of the teen going off on his own, so he offers to help him crack the case.

Their travels hit a bump when they need transportation to the island but have trouble finding a local willing to escort them...until they come across Kailani, played by Vanessa Hudgens, and her father, Gabato. Together, much like in the first film, they face a lot of environmental challenges and have to fight off crazy creatures to accomplish their mission. As you can probably guess, they do, and it's a SUPER happy ending because not only does Sean meet his grandpa, repair his relationship with his stepfather, uncover riches and secrets within the mysterious island, but also gets a girlfriend out of it! It's implied that Sean and Kailani stay together during their college years, which I thought was super cute.

Performance wise, my comments echo what I shared on the first film - Josh brings a lot of energy here and his dramatic reactions feel appropriate for the situations his character was in. Action/fantasy films like this feel more believable and fun with those "over the top" reactions and Josh didn't disappoint. Much like the first one, they likely used green screens, movie magic editing, and perhaps even stunt men during production...but if there were...the swaps didn't feel noticeable to me. It definitely felt like it was Josh was indeed Josh in most if not all scenes (but I'll bet not the opening scene where he's riding the dirt bike...although I bet Josh wishes that was him. That does look like a lot of fun.)

If you haven't seen this sequel yet, it's available for purchase at most major retailers. At the time of this writing, I found it pretty easily on Amazon Video.

You're gonna wanna stay tuned for the next post - it's a big one!

Peace and Joshperity,

G
