#38: Josh in "Escobar: Paradise Lost" (2015)

If you like darker films...then boy, do I have the Josh film for you!

Josh's 2015 film, Escobar: Paradise Lost could definitely be described as dark, jaw-dropping...and intense...which gave him some room to really impress on screen, so let's talk about it!

In this film, Josh plays Nick, a young man from Canada who visits Columbia with his brother to work as a surf instructor. While trying to establish themselves there, Nick meets and falls in love with Maria, a local to the area. It seems like the beginning of a cute love story, but things get complicated real fast once Maria's drug-lord uncle gets involved in their relationship. His expectations of Nick are similar to the rest of his family members - complete loyalty, even at the expense of others' lives.

I don't want to give the whole plot away/too many spoilers here because I don't want to deprive anyone of the twists and turns of this story in case you haven't seen it, but there is an explosive scene where Josh's character "loses it" and it was probably some of the best acting I've seen him do this far in my marathon. Josh expertly welcomes us into the mind and feelings of a "good guy" put in an impossible position - he's asked to murder a young guy, something totally out of his nature, all in the name of pleasing the feared Uncle Pablo.

As things heat up at the end of the plot, so does Josh's acting, as he's tasked with welcoming us into the world of someone in a true moral crisis. It's hard for me to even do his acting justice in this blog post - I'm having trouble finding the words to express just how GOOD he was at this film, especially the second half, but just take my word for it and give this a watch!

Random fun facts for ya - other than the Hunger Games series, this is the first credit where Josh ends up a married man, and I believe the second credit where we hear him speak another language (the first one being Seven Days in Havana).

If you're willing to give this one a shot, at the time this was posted, it's available for streaming on STARZ and I was able to pick this one up on Amazon Video.

Peace and Joshperity,

G
