#39: Josh in "Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2" (2015)

Updated: 7 days ago

2015 was a big year for Josh - he closed a chapter, one that seems near and dear to his heart, and wrapped up his last Hunger Games project.

The final installment in the Hunger Games movie franchise based on the first three books came out that year, where we said goodbye to Peeta and Katniss on-screen with Mockingjay Part 2.

Similar to Mockingjay Part 1, we get more Katniss time than Peeta time (which, is actually a commonality in all of the films, since she's who the story centers around) but we do see a little bit more of Josh's character in this final part.

During Mockingjay Part 2, Peeta slowly becomes "more Peeta" as he regains his own sense of identity after being brainwashed by the Capitol. This must've been an interesting task for Josh - he's kind of in-between two states of being for Peeta...he's living in this gray area where he's trying to figure out who he was and "what's real and not real" while still coping with what happened...while their world crumbles around him. It's a lot and while the series as a whole is a wild watch with a lot of mature themes, like government corruption, the last two are particularly intense in my opinion.

Josh seemed to be up for the challenge, though, and inserted just the right amount of emotion at the right times a Peeta transformed back into who he was. Normally, I praise Josh for how expressive he is while on screen, but here, I want to give him props for knowing when to hold back. The last two films show us a different side of Peeta, since he had been compromised, and Josh needed to scrape those mannerisms and emotions he was used to showing in the first part of the series and convince us that Peeta was in a whole other headspace. He successfully does this, and that's why the ending - where we find out Peeta and Katniss marry and have kids - is even more emotional.

The Hunger Games films may be Josh's biggest credit, and while he absolutely shines here, they aren't my top Josh projects...can you guess what is? Hint - we are going to talk about it soon!

Peace and Joshperity,

G
