Sometimes, storytellers aim to place likeable, relatable characters in their work...and sometimes they totally deviate from that strategy. In Josh's 2017 horror-comedy film Tragedy Girls...I'd say they not only took a little detour, but got totally lost and threw the map out the window! They seemed to go for the "love to hate them" character approach...as even Josh's character wasn't someone I wanted to root for. Let's talk about it, and as always, his performance!
I found Tragedy Girls to be an entertaining film...but the characters were pretty insufferable...including Josh's character, Toby. The film follows around two high school girls who create content on killers for social media and in attempt to up their following and success, they do some pretty wild things. If you want to see just how wild...give this movie a watch as I won't go over the full plot here, but there are a couple spoilers ahead regarding Josh's character and role. You've been warned!

Normally, as a fan of Josh, even if his character isn't the nicest dude, I still root for them (I'm looking at you, Billy from Burn, which we'll talk about in a future blog post) but sometimes...I'm not that upset they were killed off.
Here's that spoiler alert - Toby is killed off in this film, making this Josh's first character to be killed off in a project. Toby wasn't the best dude - he was arrogant, full of himself since he was successful on social media, had become somewhat of a player, and got a motorcycle just to up his hotness/social status so...when it came to Toby the character (not Josh the actor) I wasn't a fan. However, when it comes to Josh's acting as Toby...of course I'm a fan!
As I've mentioned in other posts, I believe that the main role of an actor (other than entertain us and help us understand/connect with the story) is to make us feel something. Josh's performance as Toby made me feel annoyance at men who behave like Toby. Not only did I "love to hate" the main characters of the film, the two girls known as the "Tragedy Girls", I "loved to hate" Toby too.
& you know what that means...the sass was back! Toby has a bit of an attitude in this movie, speaks like some kind of know-it-all guru-hippie-type-dude and Josh conveys so much about this character in his short time on screen. Since Toby is killed off fairly early in this film, Josh's role in Tragedy Girls is pretty small, but I was still very much amused by his appearance as the "bad boy" in this one.
If you haven't streamed this one yet, at the time of this blog post, you can find it for free on Tubi. Happy watching!
Peace and Joshperity,
