#23: Josh in "Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant" (2009)

Did you know that Josh plays a vampire in one of his projects? No, you didn't miss him as a Cullen in Twilight. Instead, he plays a pretty twisted teenager in the 2009 release, Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant.

Haven't heard of this film? It didn't exactly receive Twilight notoriety, but it does have a pretty impressive cast. Josh joins big names like John C. Reilly, Salma Hayek, and William Dafoe. While this film wasn't commercially successful, I think it's pretty cool that Josh shared the screen with these legends! With a cast like that, and with the chance to play an "evil" character, I'm not surprised that Josh said "yes" to this project.

Up until this point in the marathon, we haven't seen Josh take on too many "sinister" characters. Sure, he's played a sassy brother demanding juice boxes, but this felt like the first time we can call his character a "villain".

In Cirque du Freak, he plays Steve, a lonely (and kinda douchey) teen. He's selfish, impulsive, and has quite the potty mouth (making this the first film we hear Josh cuss a decent amount). His vampire obsession, and dissatisfaction with life (he's the son of an uninvolved dad and a "drunk" mom) inspire him to jump on the chance to become a vampire himself...or rather a "Vampaneze".

In the film, Vampires and Vampaneze are at odds, with the latter being the "evil" group that kill their victims. Steve's desire to become Vampaneze (and spoiler alert - stay Vampaneze) does make him a villian, right? I sure think so!

Despite this being a different role for Josh at this point in his career, I think he made a believable villain. After all, I hated the character of Steve and that was kind of the point. Movies, and actors, aim to make us feel something - the fact that I strongly disliked Steve was actually a testament to Josh's acting...so go Josh!

Was this an award-winning film? No, but it was fun to see Josh take on a unique role and watch so many familiar faces within this fantasy world.

Word to the wise - skip the snacks if you watch this one. There are frequent gross and gory scenes, which weren't my cup of tea, but if that's your jam, you can find this one streaming on MAX.

Next up...2010!

Peace and Joshperity,

G
